Jennifer Lopez Files for Divorce from Ben Affleck After Months of Breakup Speculation

Updated: Nov 3

The couple renewed their romance in 2021 almost two decades after they were first engaged in the early 2000s.

Jenny from the Block has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after more than two years of marriage, according to various reports.

According to the filing, the couple has been separated since April 26, giving validity to the months-long speculation surrounding the couple’s breakup. Court records do not contain any information about a prenuptial agreement, and TMZ reports there is none. Meaning, Lopez and Affleck may have to split any assets accrued during their time together.

Lopez filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, requesting to waive spousal support for both her and Affleck. The filing comes exactly two years after they sealed their union in a second wedding ceremony in Georgia.

“She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken,” a source told PEOPLE. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

News of the relationship on shaky ground emerged in May, which was fueled by the fact the couple had not been seen publicly together for almost two months. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that Affleck was not living in the Los Angeles home he shared with Lopez.

The “Dinero” singer was asked about her relationship status during an event promoting her film “Atlas” in May, though costar Simu Liu stepped in.

“Ok, we’re not doing that,” Liu said. Lopez added: “You know better than that.”

As the couple were all smiles during Affleck’s daughter’s high school graduation at the end of May, the speculation surrounding the marriage did not go away. Entertainment Tonight reported in June that the couple was trying to sell their Beverly Hills home.

At the end of July, PEOPLE reports that Affleck bought a $20 million home in Los Angeles — seemingly sealing the couple’s fate. Celebrity realtor Josh Flagg told PEOPLE that the couple listed the Beverly Hills home close to what they paid for it, meaning they really wanted to move.

“Bennifer” first met in 2001 on the set of “Gigli,” which famously bombed at the box office, and they were engaged by November of that year. They ultimately called off the wedding in September 2003 due to “the excessive media attention.”

Lopez would go on to marry Marc Anthony in June 2004, sharing twins and ultimately divorcing a decade later. Affleck married actor Jennifer Garner in June 2005, also divorcing after 10 years together and sharing three children.
